Description: The High-water Mark (HWM) indicates the level reached by the sea at high tide, and was drawn as a base reference for the delineation of coastal management lines in the Eden District, Western Cape Province, South Africa. It is primarily based on a line indicating a 1:10yr wave run-up generated with a wave run-up simulation model, but corrections were applied manually after visual inspection using approximate indicators (vegetation line at the top of the beach, wet sands, exposed rock etc. as per aerial photography of 2013). The wave run-up model used MIKE21-FMSW software to calculate onshore wave heights and the EurOtop package to model wave run-up.

Description: The South African Protected Areas Database (SAPAD) contains spatial data for the conservation estate of South Africa. It includes spatial and attribute information for both formally protected areas and areas that have less formal protection. Data is collected by parcels which are aggregated to protected area level. Only outer boundaries are defined in this public release.SAPAD is updated on a continuous basis. It forms the basis for the Register of Protected Areas which is a legislative requirement under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, Act 57 of 2003.

Description: The littoral active zone is defined by the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act (Act No. 24 of 2008) as any land forming part of, or adjacent to, the seashore that is — (a) unstable and dynamic as a result of natural processes; and (b) characterised by dunes, beaches, sand bars and other landforms composed of unconsolidated sand, pebbles or other such material which is either un-vegetated or only partially vegetated. The littoral active zone was delineated spatially as part of a larger project delineating coastal management lines for the Eden District, Western, Cape Province, South Africa undertaken by the Western Cape Province Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning during 2016-2018. The delineation identified the littoral active zone as three constituent parts - areas below the high-water mark, active dune areas and potentially mobile dune areas or 'dune fields' (this dataset). These potentially active dune fields were digitised manually off aerial photography from 2013 and cross-referenced against associated vegetation types identified by Vlok (2014) - specifically 'Drift Sands' and 'Littoral Vegetation'.

Description: Land Capability, determined by the collective effects of soil, terrain and climate features, shows the most intensive long-term use of land for rain-fed agriculture and at the same time indicate the permanent limitations associated with the different land-use classes.
