The mobile dunes dataset identifies areas with potentially mobile sand along the coast in Eden District, Western Cape Province, South Africa, It is based on visual observations from aerial photography of 2013 and cross-referencing with associated vegetation types identified by Vlok (2014). It forms part of the littoral active zone.
<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>The littoral active zone is defined by the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act (Act No. 24 of 2008) as any land forming part of, or adjacent to, the seashore that is — (a) unstable and dynamic as a result of natural processes; and (b) characterised by dunes, beaches, sand bars and other landforms composed of unconsolidated sand, pebbles or other such material which is either un-vegetated or only partially vegetated. The littoral active zone was delineated spatially as part of a larger project delineating coastal management lines for the Eden District, Western, Cape Province, South Africa undertaken by the Western Cape Province Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning during 2016-2018. The delineation identified the littoral active zone as three constituent parts - areas below the high-water mark, active dune areas and potentially mobile dune areas or 'dune fields' (this dataset). These potentially active dune fields were digitised manually off aerial photography from 2013 and cross-referenced against associated vegetation types identified by Vlok (2014) - specifically 'Drift Sands' and 'Littoral Vegetation'. </SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
